Who commissioned the construction of the Monastery of Batalha?

Why was the Monastery built?
The Monastery was built by João I in keeping with a promise he made on the eve of the Battle of Aljubarrota, fought against Castile. The king had vowed to the Virgin Mary that, if he won the battle, he would build a grandiose monument in her honour.

The Monastery was built in this valley because it offered everything that was necessary in abundance: water, stone and wood.
