Huguet

HUGUET

Huguet was the second architect of the Monastery of Batalha.

He succeeded Afonso Domingues, and was in charge of construction from 1402 to 1438.

He married Maria Vasques but they had no children.

He lived in the Town of Batalha, where the King gave him some properties near the Monastery.

He died in early 1438 and was buried at the Church of Santa Maria-a-Velha.

It was he that introduced the Flaming Gothic style into Portugal, at the Monastery of Batalha. He played an important role in the evolution of gothic architecture during the 15th and early 16th centuries.
