Points of Interest
The town of Batalha, along with its principal landmark the Monastery of Batalha, are integrated within one of the main tourist routes in the country, which is particularly dependent on religious tourism, with Fátima at the head. From there the route heads inland to Tomar and its convent, as well as Alcobaça and Óbidos towards the coast, without forgetting the sun and sand of the beaches found at Nazaré, S. Martinho do Porto and S. Pedro de Moel.
Also found in the Town itself, after visiting the monastery one can talk a look nearby at the 15th century Parish Church of Exaltation of the Holy Cross (Igreja Matriz da Exaltação da Santa Cruz) and the 18th century Chapel of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia, in the baroque/Joanine style. And if you are up to it, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Way (Capela da Nossa Senhora do Caminho) is well worth a brief visit, at the end of the street with the same name which begins next to the Unfinished Chapels. This Chapel, perhaps 18th century and mentioned in a charming legend, once backed onto the Conventual Walls, large sections of which have survived to this day. For those made of stronger stuff a visit to the Bridge of Boutaca is recommended, built in the second half of the 19th century in the Revivalist style with neo-Gothic traces, situated to the east of the monastery’s main façade and that leads us to the Interpretation Centre of the Battle of Aljubarrota, in São Jorge, where it all began.
