MIGUEL DE ARRUDA
Miguel de Arruda was a Portuguese architect and military engineer, son of Francisco de Arruda and nephew of Diogo de Arruda.
In 1548, King João III created the position of ‘Master of works of the walls and fortifications of the kingdom, Overseas and India’, which on January 1, 1549 he entrusted to this man, who counted building fortifications in Portuguese territories abroad amongst his experience.
He was made architect of the Monastery of Batalha from 1533 onwards, by decree of King João III.
While his contribution to Batalha is considered less significant due to his intense involvement in various projects across the kingdom, as well as the various posts to which he was appointed, he was nonetheless responsible for the Renaissance balcony of the Unfinished Chapels.
He died in 1563.
