Route

Self-guided tour

Eleven stops, in the order in which the monument is visited.

  1. The tour begins in the monument church. This space, eighty metres long by twenty-two metres wide, was built using local limestone. The central nave is almost thirty metres high. Take the opportunity to admire, at the chancel, the oldest stained-glass windows in Portugal, dating from the 16th century and commissioned by King Manuel I.

  2. Next, you should visit the Founder’s Chapel, which is accessed from inside the church. In the centre lies the double tomb of King João I and Queen Filipa of Lancaster, and on the south wall are the tombs of four of their children. On the western wall, behind the tomb of the king and queen, you will find three neo-Gothic tombs containing the remains of two kings and a prince of the Avis Dynasty.

  3. Next, from inside the church, enter the circuit of the two cloisters: the Cloister of King João I and that of King Afonso V.

  4. In the Cloister of King João I you will reach the Chapter House, where the tomb of Portugal’s Unknown Soldier stands, flanked by the Christ of the Trenches. The stained-glass windows in this room also date from the 16th century. The star-vaulted ceiling covering the space of almost four hundred square metres is one of the highlights.

  5. During your tour you will pass through the friars’ dormitory, where you can see a Manueline portal. You will also pass through the friars’ washroom, a ritual space, and the former refectory — currently home to the Museum of Offerings to the Unknown Soldier.

  6. Leaving this cloister, you pass through a corridor leading to a room where temporary exhibitions are regularly held. This room was once the kitchen.

  7. Next to it is the former larder, which houses an exhibition of pottery fragments found during excavations on this site, as well as a work by the artist Nelson Ferreira.

  8. In the Cloister of King Afonso V, you can appreciate the simplicity and beauty of this place, which served very practical functions as a dormitory on the upper floor and a storeroom on the lower floor.

  9. You can continue through a door where, in a small vestibule, you will see a plaster bust of King Fernando II, who sponsored the restoration of the monastery in the 19th century.

  10. Climbing the stairs, you can visit the upper floor of the Cloister of King Afonso V and see the mechanism of the tower’s old clock, which dates from the 15th century. After descending, turn right and walk along the cloister gallery towards the gift shop.

  11. On leaving, keep to your right until you reach the Unfinished Chapels, the pantheon of King Duarte. Here you can marvel at the grandeur of this unfinished space — it has no roof — and admire the Manueline portal by Mateus Fernandes, an architect in the service of King Manuel I.
